The Debate and Republican Calls for Sara Palin to Step Down

Last night some friends and I gathered to watch the debate (links to the whole debate below). It was amazing how everywhere we went around Harvard to watch it was full to capacity and security wouldn’t let us in. It was a bigger deal here than even the Super Bowl. I wonder how it was elsewhere. We first went to the Dudley House and that was full so we thought it would be more fitting to go to the Kennedy School of Government, but of course, that was full packed, so we resigned ourselves to an over-crowded bar and stood near the entrance to watch the debate. Can you believe that even the bars were over flowing for a debate? Anyway, I was a little disappointed in the debate. McSame-as-Bush was sharper than usual, maybe they gave him adderall or something. And Obama didn’t stick it to him the way McSame-as-Bush did. Obama needs to get his hands dirty and hit him with some low blows the way McSame-as-Bush did. I was, however, pleased to see that Obama stood his ground when it came to foreign policy issues. But I didn’t like the way they spoke about the fascist state of Israel and how they kept talking about “I-ran” as it was a danger to world peace, especially since it is Israel that is armed to the teeth, destroys its neighbors, and is ethnically cleansing the Palestinians. Sigh. Also, did you like how first McCain and then Obama both referred to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as Republican Guards? There is, in fact, a huge difference in that the Republican Guards were Saddam’s elite military unit! What else? I wish that when Obama blamed McSame-as-Bush for falsely starting the Iraq War, he wouldn’t let McSame-as-Bush change the subject from the start of the war to this success in backing the “surge” strategy. Obama could have easily said that we need a president to get it right the first time, to make the life or death decisions early, instead of getting us stuck in a unjust war, not having a post-war strategy, getting everything wrong, and then after 5 years of bloodshed, finally getting something a little right (the surge). But I did like that Obama said that McSame-as-Bush thinks the war began in 2007 and not 2003. Even still, the consensus is that nobody won but Obama did better. As for the upcoming Palin-Biden debate, it’s going to be amazingly entertaining because she pretty much doesn’t know anything… to the point that conservative commentators are calling for her resignation: “‘Only Palin can save McCain, her party, and the country she loves,’ Parker writes. ‘She can bow out for personal reasons, perhaps because she wants to spend more time with her newborn. No one would criticize a mother who puts her family first. Do it for your country.’ Parker’s comments follow those by prominent conservatives David Brooks, George Will, and David Frum who have all publicly questioned Palin’s readiness to be vice president.”

“Peres Blasts Iran in UN Address”

Well, not exactly. He tried to “blast” Iran but his speech was full of holes. For example, he said “Iran is ‘at the centre of violence and fanaticism’ in the world.” This is coming from an official who represents a state that is armed to the teeth with nuclear weapons, laid ruin to a sovereign country 2 years ago (Lebanon), is ethnically cleansing the W. Bank and continuously building Jewish only settlements, is enforcing a blockade on the Gaza Strip, one of the poorest regions in the world, and further starving its people, and is notorious for murdering opponents of its illegal 41-year-old occupation, yet Iran is “at the centre of violence and fanaticism’ in the world”? He also said “Iran divided the Middle East and held back the chance of peace.” This is coming from an official representing a state that not once, but twice rejected a comprehensive peace offer by the Arab League whereby they offered Israel full peace and the normalization of relations if they inter alia withdrew from the West Bank. He also said “Iran is in breach of three UN Security Council resolutions calling for an end to its uranium enrichment programme.” This is coming from an official who represents a state that not only possesses nuclear weapons and is not a signatory to the NPT but also stands in violation of dozens of UNSC resolutions. He also charged Iran with dividing Lebanon by supporting Hizbullah. That’s funny because long before there was Hizbullah, there was a divided Lebanon. In fact, Lebanon was so divided that it imploded into a civil war in 1975. Many outside powers support different factions in Lebanon, but Israel’s problem isn’t that Iran is “dividing” Lebanon, but that it supports a movement that has successfully confronted Israel not once, but twice! And the icing on the cake was how he said the Iranian people “are not our enemies”, and added: “Their fanatic leadership is their problem and the world’s concern.” The Egyptian and Jordanian governments have peace treaties with Israel, but let there be no mistake about it, the overwhelming majority of the people of said countries consider Israel an enemy state. As for Iran, with or without the regime’s anti-Israel inclinations, the overwhelming majority of Iranians in Iran (not the diaspora community) oppose the Israeli state’s policy of ethnic cleansing!

Ahmadinejad’s Full Interview on Larry King Live

Here it is in 6 parts (thanx Ali), let me know what you think. He was spot on when it came to many international issues like Palestine, US interventionism, the nuclear double-standard, US elections, US support for Saddam during the Iran-Iraq War and Saddam’s use of chemical weapons on Iranians, but he was pretty off when it came to domestic issues. For example, his bit on homosexuals in Iran was most upsetting. He’s not to blame though, it’s the law in Iran that is the real problem and needs to be changed, NOW.
